In high school, Jim was an All-State lacrosse player and went on to play NCAA Division I varsity lacrosse at the University of Notre Dame. While getting his Ph.D. at Georgia Tech, he was an assistant lacrosse coach for the Yellow Jackets. Since then, he has completed 24 marathons and 80 triathlons of various distances (including 5 Full Ironmans - Great Floridian, IM Florida, IM Lake Placid, IM Wisconsin, and IM Louisville). Coach Jim has been coaching runners and triathletes since 2002. He has been certified as a USA Triathlon Level 1 coach since 2006 and was previously certified as a USA Track and Field Level 1 coach, USA Cycling Level 3 coach, and AFAA certified spin instructor. He founded the Atlanta Triathlon Club in 2008 and served on the USA Triathlon SE Regional Council from 2011 – 2017 where he managed clubs and youth initiatives. Coach Jim was certified as a USA Triathlon Youth and Junior coach in 2014 and started the Tri Stars kids triathlon training program in 2015. Coach Jim has a 10-year old daughter (Nora) on the team that started doing triathlons when she was 5 years old.
Coach Paula was a professional triathlete from 1986-1995. She competed in all distances internationally and specialized in Ironman. She won Ironman Canada in 1988 and 1993, was the first American woman to break 10 hours in Ironman, and was ranked 5th in the world in Ironman in 1988. She continues to compete in several sports and is in the top 5% nationally in 5k runs for her age group. Coach Paula is a Level 3 certified Spin Instructor at LaFitness Church Street and does one-on-one triathlon coaching for all distances. She coached 8-13 year olds at the National Triathlon Training Camp in Roswell, NM and coached 7-14 year olds in tennis. She was a flight instructor before becoming a commercial airline pilot. This will be Coach Paula’s first year coaching with the Tri Stars kids team. She is excited to train young triathletes and her extensive knowledge and experience will help them achieve their goals.

Coach Charlie grew up in the Atlanta area playing any sport that he could. In high school he ran track and cross country, wrestled, and played soccer. After college, he taught tenth grade math and coached the JV soccer team and eighth grade wresting team. In an attempt to get back in shape after his kids were born, he started competing in triathlons and completed numerous sprint triathlons in the Atlanta area. After seeing their dad compete, his kids (Charles and Kathryn) became interested in triathlons. Coach Charlie has been the Tri Stars head run coach since the program started in 2015. Also, his kids have been part of the Tri Stars team since 2015.

Justine is an environmental engineer and parent of two Tri Star kids - Malin and Coen. She started swimming competitively when she was 8 years old and swam year-round through high school. After college, she continued swimming competitively on various Masters teams. Justine participated in her first triathlon three years ago and has placed in her age group in many of her races. While training for triathlons, she fell in love with running and has trained for and competed in several trail and road races over the last several years. Currently, she is training for the Chicago marathon. Coach Justine was an assistant swim coach and assistant run coach for the Tri Stars in 2017. She looks forward to working with the Tri Star kids again this summer!

Vickie helped start the Atlanta Triathlon Club in 2008 and the Tri Stars kids program in 2015. Vickie does a lot of behind the scenes work to make sure that the program has everything it needs to be successful. She attends most practices and even helps out as a coach when needed. Vickie has been the Tri Stars "Team Mom" since the program started in 2015. This includes organizing our target race tent parties and bringing bagels to all the target races. Vickie is married to the Program Director (Coach Jim) and has a 9-year old daughter (Nora) in the program.
